NMDPRA approves licence for 27,000bpd Gombe Refinery

By Tochukwu Bliss, Abuja

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), yesterday announced the approval of a licence to establish (LTE) and construct a new 27,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery in Dole-Wure, Akko area of Gombe State.

NMDPRA, in a post on its official X handle, said: “Authority Chief Executive presented a Licence to Establish a 27,000 BPSD Refinery to the Managing Director/CEO of Process Design and Development Limited.

“The refinery is to be located in Dole-Wure, Akko, Gombe State.”

It added that the latest development signifies that Nigeria now officially has about 10 modular and regular refineries, adding to the nation’s refining capacity, even as many of them are inactive.

Recall that in November 2022, former President Muhammadu Buhari flagged off the first crude oil drilling project in northern Nigeria, on the boundary between Bauchi and Gombe states.

The oilfield will be developed by Sterling Global Oil, New Nigeria Development Commission (NNDC), and NNPC Ltd.

The NNPC did say that discovery of oil and gas in commercial quantities in the Gongola Basin will attract foreign investment, generate employment for the people and increase government’s revenue.

The latest development signifies that Nigeria now officially has about 10 modular and regular refineries, adding to the nation’s refining capacity, even as many of them are inactive.
