The Executive Vice Chairman, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Mohammad Haruna, says the agency is making inroads in renewable energy technologies.

Haruna disclosed this at the unveiling of the “Save 80 efficient cooking stoves,” designed and manufactured by Atmosfair, Germany, in collaboration with the agency.

He said: “With consideration to Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets for emissions reduction by 2030, the use of energy-efficient cooking stoves will boost it.

“NASENI hitherto has made several efforts in renewable energy technologies including biomass, wind energy and solar module manufacturing plant at Karshi, Abuja.

“Our progress in the production of solar cells locally will drastically reduce the per megawatt cost of clean electricity and making solar electricity available.”

The NASENI EVC said the local solar cells development will promote affordability of solar energy and bolster the energy mix.

Haruna said: “This will help the nation to achieve the UN SDG No. 7 on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and clean energy for all.

“It will also help in achieving Nigeria’s NDC target on emission reduction by 2030.”

Our progress in the production of solar cells locally will drastically reduce the per megawatt cost of clean electricity and making solar electricity available.

Representative of Atmosfair, Germany, Dr Dietrich Brockhagen, said in line with Nigeria’s NDC to the Paris Agreement, 7.3 million efficient cooking stoves were envisaged to be in use in Nigerian households by 2030.

He said: “The intergovernmental panel on climate change has identified the decline of sub-Saharan forests as a tipping point for Africa but for the entire world climate.

“So, we are all together in this and international cooperation will only strengthen our forces in combating global warming.

“Germany is too much dependent on Russian gas, Nigeria depends on firewood, but we can cooperate in both fields — be it with cooking stoves or green hydrogen gas and become stronger together.”

Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Faruk Malami-Yabo, said the “save 80 efficient cooking stoves,” will help to combat the various disasters relating to climate change.

Three of the beneficiaries, Mrs Agada Mathew, Tani Tanko, and Hafsatu Adamu commended NASENI and Atmosfair, for the invaluable gesture.

“We will ensure the judicious usage of the stoves as they will curb many of the problems we are facing while using firewood or charcoal,” they said. (NAN)
