The Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has suspended the strike embarked upon over a new minimum wage and hike in electricity tariff for one week.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, who confirmed the suspension, said a communiqué to that effect would soon be issued.
He said: “A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect.”
Mr. Osifo spoke after a joint extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the unions in Abuja today.
Earlier, the NLC had insisted that the strike was still on until the unions and their affiliates decide otherwise, saying: “Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today 4th June, we are still on strike,”
The Organised Labour suspended the strike following the federal government’s declaration of its readiness to offer above N60,000 national minimum wage yesterday, as proposed to the tripartite committee that deliberated on the issue.
Yesterday’s meeting of the committee was convened on Monday night by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, after the Organised Labour had embarked on an indefinite strike to press its demand for a new minimum wage.
A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect.
