Customs withdraws import declaration amid suspension of FOB charges

By Tochukwu Bliss, Abuja

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has stopped import declaration following the suspension of the four per cent free-on-board (FOB) charges.

NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, in a statement in Abuja today, on Monday, said the annulment of declaration became expedient to ensure clarity, maintain consistency in Customs operations, and prevent disruptions in the clearance process.

Recall that FOB charges, which are calculated based on the value of imported goods, including transportation expenses up to the port of loading, were dropped on February 11, following criticisms that it would escalate inflation and worsen current economic crises.

Mr Maiwada, announcing the cessation of import declaration, said: “Affected importers, customs agents, and stakeholders are required to recapture their declarations to proceed with the clearance of their goods.”

He noted that this can be done via designated Customs platforms, adding that measures have been put in place to ensure a seamless process.

He also directed Customs Commands nationwide to provide the necessary assistance and clarifications to importers and agents, while reaffirming NCS’s commitment to enforcing government fiscal policies under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

reiterating the importance of continuous consultation with stakeholders, Mr Maiwada explained that the move is a part of the NCS’s broader efforts to enhance service delivery and remain a public-centric organisation.

Encouraging importers to take advantage of the opportunity to avoid further delays in the clearance of their consignments, he reassured that “Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, the Service is committed to openness and transparency.”
