Prof. Epiphany Azinge appointed president, Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal

Nigerian Lawyer, Academic and judge at the Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal Sitting in London, representing Nigeria and Africa, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, has been appointed President of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT).

He becomes the first black man to hold such a position in the CSAT.

A letter dated August 23rd, and signed by the Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland QC, reads: “Prof. Azinge was appointed pursuant to your nomination to, and selection by, the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Secretariat, and in accordance with the Statute of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT).

“Prof. Azinge would be assisted as President by the other members of CSAT and supported by the Executive Secretary to the Tribunal.

“The service as President of CSAT is one that is largely honorary and unremunerated.”

The letter also disclosed that “Prof. Azinge would receive a supplementary gratuity of £600 per annum, met by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

“This would be in addition to his annual gratuity, sitting allowance and travel expenses as a member of the Tribunal, in accordance with his existing appointment to CSAT.”

Azinge, also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was first appointed a member of the CSAT on June 1, 2015, for a period of four years and reappointed for another term of four years as a nominee of the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2019.
